Karamu Ya Wahitimu

Karamu Ya Wahitimu (Kiswahili for Celebration for the Graduates), a pre-commencement ceremony for graduating African, African American, Native American and Latino students. Karamu Ya Wahitimu is a festive and cultural occasion for family, friends, faculty, staff and colleagues to celebrate your academic achievements.

During the ceremony, you will participate in a processional with faculty and other graduates. Also, you will be individually acknowledged by a designated representative from your respective college. The Karamu Ya Wahitimu will be held Friday April 24 at 6:30PM., at Cartwright Hall. A reception will immediately follow the ceremony.

2015 Academic STARS Summer Institute

  • What is Academic STARS? The Academic Students Achieving and Reaching for Success (STARS) program is designed for newly enrolled Kent State University freshmen who are African-American, Latino or Native American. The program helps to prepare students for their college experience with opportunities to build a solid academic foundation, achieve excellence in education and develop leadership qualities. 
  • When does the program take place? Academic STARS begins with a five-week summer institute where you will take two courses and earn 6 college credit hours that count toward graduation. You'll learn skills to be successful in college, such as time management, taking notes, reading and studying, taking tests, listening, setting goals and making decisions. You will also be introduced to a wide range of helpful campus resources.
  • Participation is by invitation only
  • Expenses for students who are selected to participate are paid by the Student Multicultural Center
  • You will move into a residence hall on Sunday, June 7, 2015 and will live on campus for the entire five weeks
  • Classes will begin on Monday, June 8, 2015
  • Current Kent State students serve as peer mentors throughout the summer institute
  • The institute includes a multicultural component that promotes recognition, understanding and appreciation of cultural differences

Academic STARS Summer Institute:

Thank you for your interest with the 2015 Academic S.T.A.R.S Summer Institute. Please fill out the entire application, incomplete applications will not be considered. All applications and application materials must be submitted by February 27 by 5PM

2015 Kupita Transiciones Orientation Program: Leader & Guide Application

Thank you for your interest with the Kupita Transiciones Orientation Program! Starting this year K/T Mentors will be known as K/T Leaders and K/T Support Staff will be known as K/T Guides. Please read the following information and click here to complete the Electronic Application

K/T Leaders: Serves as mentors to students for the four-day orientation and throughout the school year

To be a K/T Leader a student should:

-Be at least a Junior or Senior
-Have a GPA 2.75 or higher

K/T Guides: Provides logistical support for program to ensure student success for the duration of the program

To be a K/T Guide a student should:

-Be at least a Sophomore, Junior or Senior
-Have a GPA 2.5 or higher

Important Dates
-Last day to apply: February 27
-Interviews will take place from March 16-20
-Selection of Kupita Transiciones Leaders & Guides will take place April 1
-Kupita Transiciones Orientation: August 24-27
