Sociologists for Women in Society

Sociologists for Women in Society (SWS) is an international organization of social scientists – students, faculty, practitioners, and researchers – working toward the emancipation of women and other historically oppressed groups. Kent SWS, our local chapter, is devoted to scientific investigation that combines education with political action. We believe that inequalities must be challenged both within the university setting and within the wider society to create affirmative and enduring feminist social change.

We encourage any Kent State University student who shares our vision of emancipatory social change to join our local SWS chapter, which came into being in the fall of 2006. In our short organizational life, we have accomplished a number of initiatives to advance our cause. These Kent SWS-sponsored activities included the development of a mentoring program for new graduate students in the sociology department, the implementation of a series of brown bag discussions for KSU and University of Akron sociology students interested in procuring professional skills to advance their knowledge of and success in the field, and the organization of a department-wide holiday gift drive for women in a local battered women’s shelter. In 2007, we intend to continue our tradition of reaching out to members of our academic community as well as our local communities in our efforts to foster positive social change.
