Creative Team

University Communications and Marketing provides professional consultation and resources designed to assist the communications and marketing efforts of programs and departments throughout Kent State University's eight-campus network. This includes creative support by these UCM staffers:

Bob Christy graduated from Kent State in 1995 (B.S., photojournalism) after serving in the U.S. Air Force. He covered the 1996 New Hampshire Primary for UPI and then returned to Ohio to work for the New Philadelphia Times-Reporter before joining UCM in 1999. His work has appeared in newspapers around the country and northeast Ohio, and received honors from the Ohio News Photographer's Association and the University Photographers of America Association.

Jeff Florentine, Senior Graphic Designer, University Communications and Marketing

Jeff A. Florentine is a 2011 graduate of Kent State with a degree in visual communication design and a minor in photo-illustration. He prepared for his career as an intern and longtime student worker at UCM prior to graduation, at which time he accepted the position of graphic designer at Meister Media Worldwide in Willoughby, Ohio. Jeff’s work at Meister has garnered several accolades including a 2012 ASBPE Gold Regional award for best computer-generated magazine concept cover, a 2014 Char Sine Editorial Excellence award for best magazine cover and a runner up for best editorial spread design.

Jeff Glidden, a 1987 graduate of Kent State’s photojournalism program, has worked at the university for more than 15 years. He has twice been named Photographer of the Year by the University Photographers Association of America and has received numerous awards from the Ohio News Photographers Association.

Jon Jivan is a 2008 Kent State University graduate and holds a bachelor's degree in Electronic Media Production. A two-time Iraq war  veteran, Jon served for 11 years in the U.S. Army Reserve. His works have earned first place awards at the Black Squirrel Flix Fest, the Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts and the Cleveland 48 Hour Film Project.

Jody Kovolyan joined Kent State in November 2005 with a background and B.B.A. in Marketing (Kent State University). Her previous work experience was centered on the purchasing function for several of Cleveland’s leading electronic distribution companies.

Larry Langston holds a bachelor’s degree in Visual Communication Arts from Kent State University. He joined the UCM team in 2009. Prior to working for UCM, he was a graphic designer for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Quicken Loans Arena. Previously, he worked as a graphic designer for OfficeMax at the corporate headquarters in Shaker Heights. Past responsibilities include creating concepts for new marketing campaigns and designing a wide variety of printed and digital materials -- from signage to complete marketing campaigns.

Dustin Lee graduated from Kent State in 2007 with a B.S. in electronic media production. He has worked as a freelance videographer and motion graphics designer for EDR Media in Beachwood, Ohio, and was previously a multimedia editor/producer for Advanstar Communications in North Olmsted, Ohio.

Susan Menassa has been with Kent State since 1996. Previously she has worked in media relations for the Bureau of Worker's Compensation in Columbus, as a reporter for the Leesburg/Commercial and the Tampa Tribune in Florida, and as a freelance writer in Greece. She has a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of South Florida and a master's in journalism from The Ohio State University.

Nicholas Moore, a 1990 graduate of Kent State, started his career at the university in the Office of Alumni Relations. He was part of the creative team responsible for the redesign of the award-winning quarterly magazine. He is now responsible for designing advertising and marketing materials for a variety of campus clients including the Kent State University Museum and the Alumni Association.

Melissa Olson, Senior Graphic Designer, University Communications and Marketing

Melissa Olson holds a BFA in graphic design and photography from The University of Akron. Prior to working with UCM on the Kent State Magazine, Melissa worked at WhiteSpace Creative in Akron, Ohio as well as several agencies in Fresno, California. Past responsibilities include production of print and web layouts, event and promotional photography, as well as social media management, copywriting and illustrations for use across multiple platforms. Melissa also serves as an ADDY co-chair for the Akron chapter of the American Advertising Federation (AAF-Akron) and Secretary of the Kent Jaycees.

Jan Senn, Editorial Curator, University Communications and Marketing

Jan Senn joined Kent State in July 2014 to oversee the redesign and production of the Kent State Magazine in both print and electronic publications. Previously she was managing editor of the alumni magazine of Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, for eight years. She has also edited several national and regional consumer publications, including positions with the Taunton Press, North American Media Group, and Minnesota Monthly Publications. She earned a B.S. in Design from the University of Cincinnati and a M.A. in Intercultural Studies with a concentration in cross-cultural communication from Wheaton College Graduate School.

A 1989 Kent State graduate (B. S. Advertising), Phil B. Soencksen joined the UCM team in 2010.  He returns to the university with more than 20 years of advertising, marketing and branding experience, honed while working as a Creative Director and Associate Creative Director at several notable northeast Ohio advertising agencies. In his career, he has developed powerful, creative and strategic communications for a variety of well-known regional,national, and international companies in a wide variety of industries.  Soencken’s work has been recognized with a variety of regional and international awards.

With more than 21 years of experience in communications, Ramona Stamm, B.S.E., M.A., has been with University Communications and Marketing since 1991. She previously worked for an international marketing company. In addition, she has taught literature, composition and business communications at Kent State, The University of Akron and The Pennsylvania State University.

Jason Zehner earned his bachelor's degree in journalism with a focus on newspaper and magazine design from Kent State University in 2004. Prior to joining UCM, he worked as a designer at Advance Display Systems, composing advertising and marketing material in their production department.
