Where Do I Get Started?

Never used CommonSpot before? Is your department or office moving its website into the CommonSpot editing system? The steps below will help you in your transition. CommonSpot is the university's content management system. You use it to easily update and maintain your website.

Have a website not maintained with CommonSpot*

  1. Schedule a scope meeting with the web team by e-mailing webteam@kent.edu. Ask to be signed up for the CommonSpot listserv, a way of receiving updates on trainings, planned site outages, etc.
  2. Create a site map or plan of attack for how your pages will be organized. The examples below were created in Gliffy, a free online graphing program. You can also make a simple outline in Microsoft Word. Site maps are a planning document. Follow whatever method works for your office.
  3. Gather pertinent documents and images for your new site.
  4. Attend a training session, held once a month. Be sure to check the schedule and sign up. Bring your documents and images to create a page or two during training.
  5. Construct your new site. Don't forget to reference the CommonSpot manual.
  6. Finish your site and request it go "live" by e-mailing webteam@kent.edu. Make sure your old site is deactivated and has the proper url redirects in place.
  7. Don't forget to sign up for the CommonSpot listserv, a way of receiving updates on trainings, planned site outages, etc. E-mail Lin Danes at ldanes@kent.edu to get on the list.

Have a website managed with CommonSpot already*

  1. Attend a training session, held once a month. Be sure to check the schedule and sign up.
  2. Edit your site. Don't forget -- there's a CommonSpot manual, which should help you as you edit.
  3. Problems? Questions? E-mail webteam@kent.edu.
  4. Don't forget to sign up for the CommonSpot listserv, a way of receiving updates on trainings, planned site outages, etc. E-mail Lin Danes at ldanes@kent.edu to get on the list.

*How do I determine this, you may be asking? Does your website look like this page? Then your office, department or division is likely maintained through the CommonSpot web editing system.
