This session focuses on the format and structuring of TAs in different science departments at the university and various duties that are associated. Presenters will discuss teaching in traditional and non-traditional science lab settings and the resources that are available to new TAs.

Best Practices for the Online Classroom

This session will cover the five major components that are impacted by the online environment, and best practices to address them. Whether you're brand-new to online learning or you've taught or taken online classes, this presentation will help you think through how to set you and your students up for success.

Career Services 

The Career Services Center has a wealth of information for you as a graduate student, as well as for the undergraduates you may be serving, including: part-time employment, graduate assistantships, resume/cover letter writing, networking, job searching, and career exploration.

Complex Conversations in Academia

This workshop will continue the conversation started in the Ballroom.  We will focus on working together to navigate complex situations that you may face as a graduate student.  We will also discuss possible ways of effectively handling complex academic interactions.

Faculty Panel

This panel will include faculty from a variety of disciplines and graduate programs. Panelists will provide insights on research and mentoring relationships with students. They will also share academic and professional expectations for their graduate students, and how they differ from those for undergraduates. 

Grading and Evaluation

This session will present generalizable advice on assessing student work.  Presenters will focus on useful grading technologies, assessment techniques that emphasize validity and reliability, time-saving strategies for responding to student writing, and policies for handling plagiarism.

Graduate Student Panel

This panel will feature graduate students from a variety of backgrounds. Master's and doctoral student panelists will discuss and answer your questions regarding topics ranging from graduate student life and thriving at Kent State, to Graduate Student Senate and adapting to the academic rigor of graduate school.

Navigating Your Role: Self-Care and Wellness

This workshop will focus on the importance of tending to self-care and finding a healthy balance between academic and personal responsibilities. Students will be provided with useful on- and off-campus resources, and they will have the opportunity to participate in stress-relieving exercises.

Overview of Digital Teaching & Learning Tools at KSU

This session is a high-level overview of electronic resources available on campus for teaching and learning. These tools include file sharing, cloud storage, real-time collaboration in Google Docs, wireless access, and e-learning tools like Blackboard, iTunes U, and KSUTube. We will also review tech support and tech training options available on campus. 

Promoting Student Engagement and Understanding in the Classroom

The goals of this workshop include providing graduate students with principles and strategies for developing lectures and/or discussions, as well as models for creating active and engaged learning environments. Presenters will also discuss ways to integrate student learning paradigms into your classes to promote deeper student engagement and understanding.

The Virtual Student: Navigating the Online Learning Environment

The online learning environment differs in many ways from the traditional, face-to-face classroom environment.  This workshop will present five strategies for succeeding in this environment, as well as some useful technology tools to help you manage your online learning experience.
