Foley & Lardner Scholarship Awarded to UFLaw Student

Published: February 3rd, 2003

Category: News Briefs

Karla Haynes (1L, right) will receive a $5,000 Foley & Lardner Minority Scholarship, which includes an internship and other benefits. “Karla is an outstanding woman, and I’m sure this is one of many honors that will come her way,” said Desta Meghoo-Peddie, Associate Director of the Center for the Study of Race and Race Relations. Haynes is from Yukon, Oklahoma, and managed businessdevelopment for the Miami Herald Online and El Nuevo Herald Digital before enrolling at the law school. She worked for the U.S. Department of Commerce as an International Trade Specialist and Export Administration Specialist, where she helped firms develop high-potential international markets and counseled them regarding regulatory obligations. She has lived in the Dominican Republic and is fluent in Spanish. Meghoo said, “A Foley & Lardner representative told me it was a tough choice, because all candidates were well prepared. He was speaking about my Virgil Hawkins Summer Fellows, first-year students who typically have little experience with the legal profession. I am proud of them all. “The state cut minority scholarships, and our alumni and concerned law firms are working to re-establish them,” said Meghoo. “Until then, it is encouraging to have firms such as Foley & Lardner who realize that including minorities in their law firms is not just good business, but also the right thing to do. We applaud their commitment to diversity and equality.”
