Faehner — First Student & Youngest to Lead Bar’s YLD — Works on Hurricane Relief

Published: September 7th, 2004

Category: News Briefs

UF law LL.M. in Taxation student Michael Faehner (right) — the first student and youngest person ever to lead the 20,000-plus members of the Florida Bar’s Young Lawyer Division (YLD) — is working with FEMA to coordinate volunteers to assist storm victims as well as supporting goals for the Florida YLD.

In the wake of Hurricane Charley, Faehner and other Florida Bar members worked to restore affected area court systems, and 600-plus Florida Bar volunteers assisted hurricane victims without a lawyer or resources to hire one. In addition, Bar members donated over $4,000 in just a week to the Attorneys Charitable Trust (ACT), a 501-c- 3 set up after September 11 to channel donations to victims of disasters and assist affected Bar members and charitable organizations providing direct aid. The YLD also is working with several state agencies, including the Attorney General, to coordinate on-site assistance and information. Now, following Hurricane Frances, there will be much more to do.

In a July 15 article in The Florida Bar News, Faehner — who was voted most productive YLD member in 2002 and elected president without opposition — was quoted as saying a top goal would be reaching out to law students.

“It’s important for law students to know what they are getting themselves into. We will give them attorneys’ perspectives on how to practice law,” he said.

He also is committed to protecting the independence of the judiciary and making sure the courts are fully funded, and said there will be a YLD Legislative Day” so voices of young lawyers will be heard.”
