Dialogue of Civilizations Programs

The innovative Dialogue of Civilizations programs allow Northeastern faculty to share experiential learning with an intimate group of students beyond the Boston campus in a global milieu where different cultural perspectives on various topics are revealed through dialectic. The goal of each program is to both connect students with their peers in different national, cultural, political, and social environments and provide students with a “global experience,” in an intimate setting, that builds upon and enhances their academic studies and training in Boston. Faculty leaders will have the opportunity to work alongside the Global Experience Office to bring a unique experiential learning opportunity to students at their on-site location. Below are some components of a DOC program:

  • Faculty spend approximately 30 days in a chosen country or countries with a group of students in either the Summer I or Summer II semester, depending on the location of the program or the faculty’s personal schedule.
  • The recommended range of students is between 15 to 35 participants, depending on the program and location. These numbers are carefully chosen by the faculty to foster group bonding and compliment the goals and objectives of the specific program.
  • Faculty teach two courses, each worth 4 credits for undergraduate students. The course offerings strategically align with the chosen international location and expected learning outcomes set forth for students.
  • Students will be charged NU undergraduate tuition for 8 credits in addition to a fee, depending on the program, that covers the instruction, airfare, housing, and support while abroad.

Embedded Programs

Embedded programs are opportunities for faculty who are teaching a course during the Fall or Spring semester to lead a one-week immersion program in an international location. The goal of Embedded programs is to enhance the course by liaising it with a field-study experience in a country or location that pertains to the course material. Similar to Dialogue of Civilizations programs, faculty will work in collaboration with the Global Experience Office to bring a unique experiential learning opportunity to students at their on-site location. Below are some components of an Embedded program:

  • Faculty have the opportunity to offer these programs during the week of Winter break (late December to early January) or Spring break (early March) during the academic year, depending on which semester the on-campus course is being taught.
  • These programs run for a period of 7-10 days as to not interrupt the on-campus learning component.
  • Students must be enrolled in the course to participate in the international component of the program. If they choose to participate, they will be charged a fee, which depends on the program and location, that covers the instruction, airfare, housing, and support while abroad.
  • Students enrolled in the course are not required to participate in the Embedded program but will be getting supplemental work to replace the international component of the course if they choose to not participate.

Roles and Responsibilities

Northeastern faculty leaders will be paired with two GEO staff members, which will depend on the country or region of the program. Both the assigned Program Coordinator and Business Operations Coordinator will serve as the faculty leader’s main points of contact and will liaise with other GEO Staff members to provide support and guidance for the faculty leader throughout the duration of the program. Faculty are encouraged to reach out to either of these contacts at any stage in the program process.

Initial Steps

Faculty who are interested in leading a Dialogue of Civilizations or Embedded program are always welcome to set up a meeting or visit the Global Experience Office and speak with a team member. A faculty member will be assigned a Program Coordinator and Business Operations Coordinator who will be the main points of contact and invaluable resources throughout the DOC process. If you are interested in leading a DOC or Embedded program, please review the following steps:

  • Contact the Global Experience Office at to request a meeting with GEO. At this time, GEO will also send along the Faculty-Led Program Handbook. Faculty can read through this handbook to begin thinking about what logistics go into creating a program, along with an overview of the process.
  • Consult with your Department Chair, College Dean, and other faculty within your department about your prospective program idea.
  • Take a look at the following lists to stay up-to-date with any international travel warnings or “high-risk” locations on the S. Department of State Travel Site and review the NU International Travel Site.
  • Begin speaking with your students about the possibility of a DOC or Embedded program. This can help spawn ideas or suggestions in the planning stages of the process.
  • Complete the Faculty-Led Program Pre-Proposal and send back to GEO via e-mail prior to the deadline. GEO will be in touch with the faculty leader to schedule a meeting, at which time they will be assigned a Program Coordinator and a Business Operations Coordinator, depending on the desired location of the program.


The intent of a Program Development Fellowship is to increase the number of NU students participating in global experiences by soliciting ideas from NU faculty to either improve existing faculty-led programs or accomplish the necessary in-country pre-work to launch new faculty-led programs. GEO will create fellowship opportunities for new or returning faculty each fiscal year. Following a site visit, faculty will be required to either propose a new faculty-led program for the following year or submit a non-feasibility report to GEO. Throughout their application process, faculty can request additional information and support from the Global Experience Office.

Initial Steps

Faculty interested in pursuing a Program Development Fellowship opportunity should contact the Global Experience Office at to schedule a meeting. Following this meeting, GEO will request the following information from the faculty member:

  • Demographic information: Lead Faculty Name, College Name, Department, Chair Name
  • Narrative which outlines:
    • Program summary
    • Academic content and courses
    • Region/countries to be visited and why
    • Linkages between academics and location
    • Proposed Budget, Duration & Expected Dates of Travel
  • Outline of completed pre-work
  • Approval or note of support from department chair (this can be an email print out)
