Welcome Dr. Rudolph NavariWe are very pleased to welcome Rudolph M. Navari, MD, PhD, who joined our faculty as Professor in the Division of Hematology and Oncology, Department of Medicine on November 15, 2016.
Dr. Navari joins UAB from the position of Director, Cancer Care Program, Central and South America for the World Health Organization. He will provide care to patients diagnosed with GI cancers and other solid tumors.
Dr. Navari received a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Virginia and his M.D. from the Medical College of Virginia. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at UAB, where he was also a chief resident. Following fellowship training in Medical Oncology at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, he returned to Alabama and held multiple provider and leadership positions at Simon-Williamson Clinic, Birmingham; Baptist Medical Center-Princeton, Birmingham; and Bessemer Carraway Medical Center, Bessemer from 1983-1998. Continuing a strong path of leadership and service, Dr. Navari subsequently moved to Indiana where he held various high-level positions (1999-2014) at the Walther Cancer Research Center; University of Notre Dame; and the Indiana University School of Medicine. He remained a practicing hematologist-oncologist throughout this time.
Dr. Navari’s research focus is in supportive care in clinical oncology, especially as it relates to developing more effective anti-emetic regimens. He is a contributing author to more than 140 manuscripts, including two 2016 publications in NEJM. In addition, he is active in leading clinical trials and a recipient of several NIH grants and of awards for his commitment to mentorship and teaching.

Welcome Dr. Devika DasWe are very pleased to welcome Devika Das, MD, who joined our faculty as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Hematology and Oncology, Department of Medicine on November 1, 2016. Actually, we are very happy to welcome her back to our Division, since she was previously a Hematology/Oncology fellow with us from 2012 to 2015.
Dr. Das specializes in the care of patients with lung cancer and other solid tumors. She will see patients at the Birmingham Veterans Administration Medical Center and The Kirklin Clinic. Her areas of interest are healthcare quality and safety. She is very enthusiastic about being involved in resident and fellow education. She is currently obtaining a healthcare MBA through the American Association for Physician Leadership Master’s program.
Dr. Das comes to UAB from Luis Pineda M.D., P.C. where she held the position of Attending Physician. She attended medical school at Grant Medical College in Mumbai, India. She completed an Internal Medicine residency at UAB, prior to her fellowship in Hematology/Oncology here.
